Let’s give a chance to older people with dementia to get in touch with the beautiful world of art

What is the chance for older people to get in touch with the art? Even more if they suffer dementia or another serious illness. The shorter answer is – almost none. But the longer one is bigger when there is a willingness.

Foundation “Compassion Alzheimer Bulgaria” invited us to jointly do a series of virtual tours around world famous and Bulgarian museums for older people from the Care Centres for Adults with Dementia in Razgrad and Kazanlak. The project is being realised with the support of the “Our Parents” fund of BCause Foundation.

Withing the project, we will do 12 virtual tours around world famous and Bulgarian museums, like Louvre, The State Hermitage Museum and National Art Gallery in Sofia. In different thematic sessions, we will talk about portraits, town and rural landscapes, still lives with fruits, deer or flowers, artworks with animals, etc.

The sessions are developed according to a special methodology, considering the profile and specific requirement of older people with dementia, and combine short lecturettes on the topic and the presented artworks and suitable musical accompaniments. A variety of practical activities are also included prior and during the sessions, to encourage older people not to be passive recipients, but to be actively engaged with the discussed works. Moderator of the sessions is Mariana Petrova, founder of the Creativity and Educational Studio „ARTIED“.
