How can museums and art galleries become more welcoming, interesting and engaging for people aged 55+, not only as visitors but also as active participants in cultural life?

This topic is in the focus of our project Cultural Ambassadors: Redefining Adult Education in Cultural Spaces (MUGArtS), (2025-1-LT01-KA220-ADU-000354739). The partners are: VSI EDUKACINIAI PROJEKTAI (EDUPRO), Creativity and Educational Studio “ARTIED” from Bulgaria, Bucovina Institute from Romania and MOSAIC from Greece.

The project’s general objective is to foster inclusion and civic engagement of seniors by empowering them as cultural ambassadors through non-formal educational activities in museums and art galleries. On the other hand, we want to increase the capacity of cultural institutions and cultural workers and educators on how to better engage these generations in interactive, experiential activities.

During the project we will:

  1. Develop a 4-module Training programme “Cultural Ambassadors” and will test it with representatives of the project’s target group – people aged 55+ who have interests in the cultural sphere. Topics, which we will cover in the Programme, are: 1) Sensory Engagement in Museums and Galleries: Using the Five Senses and TimeSlips-Inspired Activities; 2) Making museums and galleries more inclusive and accessible for seniors; 3) Understanding Art and Culture through connecting with artworks (following the art appreciation approach); 4) Educational Techniques: Interactive storytelling and fostering discussions. After successful completion of each module, learners will be able to receive a separate certificate, and upon completion of the entire Programme they will receive a full certificate “Cultural Ambassador”.
  2. Create digital training materials in the form of a Practical Guide and vodcasts (video podcasts) to increase the effectiveness of training activities in cultural spaces focused on elderly generations.
  3. Organise2 international trainings, during which we will actively involve people aged 55+ and those working in museums and galleries in validating the proposed practical activities for more effective engagement of elderly generations in cultural experiences and for testing different approaches for adapting cultural spaces to senior visitors and initiating activities suitable for them.
  4. Organise a series of webinars, multiplication events and an international conference for dissemination of the project results and achievements.
